Kyoto, Nara and Osaka in depth

One base in Kyoto for most of the journey, so there is time for early-morning temples, a tea master in Uji and an evening of Kyoto's traditions, before Nara and Osaka.

Day by day

Day 1Arrive at Kansai airport; private transfer to Kyoto (about 90 minutes).
Day 2Higashiyama: Kiyomizu-dera early, the lanes of Sannenzaka, Gion in the evening.
Day 3Arashiyama: the bamboo grove before the crowds, the gardens of Tenryu-ji and Okochi Sanso.
Day 4Uji: matcha with a tea master and the Byodo-in temple; Fushimi Inari in the late afternoon.
Day 5A slower day: zazen in a Zen temple, a private wagashi class, and dinner with a maiko by arrangement.
Day 6Nara: Todai-ji, the lanterns of Kasuga Taisha and the deer park, then on to Osaka.
Day 7Osaka: the castle grounds and a food walk through Kuromon market, or a half day to Himeji Castle.
Day 8Transfer to Kansai airport (about 50 minutes).
